The discounter Aldi got a shit storm. The reason for this was probably a misunderstanding.

A well-intentioned campaign has given Germany’s discount giant Aldi a shitstorm on social media. Probably also because many people misunderstood an announcement by the company. Actually, Aldi only wanted to stop selling baby food products at the end of the year. After Aldi Nord announced last week that it would no longer sell baby food but instead donate it to the Ukraine aid organization, outrage arose online.

Aldi accelerates the delisting

The plight of many people and especially small children caused by the Ukraine war prompted Aldi to bring forward the planned measure. “Due to the currently critical situation in Ukraine, we are now accelerating the planned delisting of articles and are not selling off the remaining stocks and the sales,” said a spokesman for the company when asked by the Munich daily newspaper “tz”.

Previously, there had been some angry reactions to a notice in a branch in Hanover on social media. There was an information sheet hanging in front of an empty shelf that read: “Dear customers, we have decided to remove baby food from our range. In order to be able to provide help quickly for the Ukraine, we have the remaining stocks directly from our branches picked up and forwarded. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. Your Aldi team”.

Strange reactions in the comments

The reactions to it were very divided. Some users described this as “insane” or “unbelievable”. Others said that there were also children in Germany who wanted to be fed. There were even calls for a boycott.

Others commented much more calmly and did not skimp on criticism of the critics. “How did people feed their offspring before companies pureed and bottled food?” Was asked, for example.

Another clarified: “Aldi is getting a shit storm because they are giving baby food to Ukraine refugees. After all, German babies also need food. In fact, Aldi was in the process of throwing baby food out of the range anyway. The unsuccessful PR stunt shows where the German ones are Comfort zone ends.”
