The Quick-Step team has announced that world champion Julian Alaphilippe will stay in hospital in Herentals, near Antwerp, where he was placed under observation after his serious fall on Sunday during Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
“Julian had two broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and a haemopneumothorax. The complexity of his condition means that an additional observation period will be necessary before a recovery plan is decided, ”said the Belgian formation.
Van Wilder jaw surgery
Alaphilippe was hit in the very big fall that affected the peloton on Sunday, 60 kilometers from the finish of the Doyenne des Classiques. Another rider from the Quick-Step team, the Belgian Ilan Van Wilder, was also injured, forcing him to give up the next Giro (May 6 to 29).
“Ilan underwent surgery to correct the damage to his jaw,” said Patrick Lefevere’s training. The doctors were happy with how the procedure went and he went home for a recovery period.”
