Alaphilippe and Bardet on the right track? The 10th stage of the Tour of Italy live

60km – 3’30” ahead for the leading group

The winner of the day is probably part of this big leading group. And given the stellar pedigree of the escapees, it is difficult to isolate a single favorite.

Among the best climbers are Esteban Chaves, Romain Bardet, JuanPe Lopez, Maximilian Schachmann, Domenico Pozzovivo, Filippo Zana. But the last climb which will lead to the finish is not beyond the reach of punchers like Julian Alpahilippe or the Paret-Peintre brothers…

62km – Four French people in the breakaway

There are four Tricolores to have hit the right wagon this Tuesday. The two Paret-Peintre brothers from Decathlon-AG2R, Aurélien and Valentin, as well as Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL).

63km – It’s over for the two leaders, we hold on to today’s breakaway

They are joined by the counter group, which now gives us a huge breakaway of 27 riders with a 2’45” lead over the peloton, which let it slip away.

The best placed overall is no longer Romain Bardet, but the Italian Filippo Zana, 7’12” behind Tadej Pogacar.

66km – We almost had a tragedy because of…a dog!

Big scare for the counter group, whose runners almost fell when crossing the path of an off-leash dog… A Lidl-Trek runner even seems to have hit the animal. Miraculously, no one ends up on the ground.

68km – We approach the first listed difficulty of the day

The runners will soon arrive at the foot of Camposauro, 2nd category difficulty, the first listed in this 10th stage.

6.1km at an average of 7.5%, with a peak of almost 9%, that should cause damage…

71km – Romain Bardet best placed among the escapees

If the counter group were to catch the two escapees, we would find ourselves with a group of 19 at the front of the race. And the best placed overall would be…Romain Bardet.

What to think about the pink jersey if the UAE let it slip away? Oh that’s okay, we can dream a little…

73km – The counter group looks great

Julian Alaphilippe, Romain Bardet, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Tobias Foss, Juan-Pe Lopez, Esteban Chaves, Domenico Pozzovivo, and many others…

The group of 17 chasing the escapees is full of big names.

78km – Alaphilippe and Bardet try to leave

The two French people are in a group of 12 trying to pursue the leading men. There is also a third Tricolor, Aurélien Paret-Peintre. What is there to dream of a French victory this evening?

79km – It’s rising steeply now

The ascent is not recorded, and yet the percentages reach 11%. There is no doubt that some good punchers have targeted this moment to launch their attack.

85km – The peloton has slowed down significantly

The pace of the peloton is reduced as the first difficulties of the day approach. The gap is now 1’18” for the escapees, but it’s still too close to think about winning. If we had to bet, we wouldn’t really bet on them…

89km – Quentin Hermans lets his two companions go

The Alpecin-Deceuninck runner got up to let his sprinter Kaden Groves, who had joined the counter group, pass in 3rd position in the intermediate sprint. Result: there are only two left in the lead, Simon Clarke and Alessandro de Marchi.

But their lead is very small: only 0’24” ahead. It’s hard to believe it…

93km – This time, a real counter is formed

There are nine of them chasing the three fugitives, and they have already taken more than 20 seconds from the morning breakaway. And the line-up is rather strong: Filippo Ganna, Simon Geschke, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Andrea Bagioli, Simone Velasco, Henok Mulubrhan, Edoardo Tandii, Attila Valter, Luca Covili.

And when Ganna is in a breakaway, you better take her seriously.

96km – The gap starts to decrease again

The road rises very slightly, and the lead of the three leading men drops back to under a minute. 0’54” ahead now.

100km – The intermediate sprint is approaching, and that doesn’t help the breakaway

We feel that the sprinters’ teams are waking up a little as the intermediate sprint at Arpaia approaches. The breakaway will have difficulty building any further gap between now and then. But after that…

102km – We’re almost done with the flat

From now on, it will only go up or down…

103km – The breakaway passes the minute

That’s it, the three leading men are more than a minute ahead. And at the same time, a counterattack of five riders is formed…

106km – We started off on very high bases

At this rate, the finish will be around 4:30 p.m.

110km – 0’36” ahead for the leading men

Not enough to be safe, they remain within reach of the runners who would feel strong this Tuesday…

116km – Too many breakaway candidates?

The little sentence from Tadej Pogacar who said he was ready to give up his pink jersey did not fall on deaf ears. Result: everyone wants to be part of the breakaway…and the breakaway struggles to leave.

122km – There are now three in front

The Italian Alessandro de Marchi joined the two front men.

126km – 53km/h average from the start

It’s going very fast at the start of this stage, the tailwind has nothing to do with it. But that does not favor the two fugitives of the day, who only have a 12 second lead.

127km – The escapees are at full speed, but the gap is not growing

Hermans and Clarke do not save their strength, hoping to open up a sufficient gap to validate their exit certificate. But after 15km of racing, they only have a 15 second lead.

136km – A very exciting start to the stage

We feel that the peloton is quite excited by the prospect of a breakaway that would go to the end. But the UAE, placed at the head of the pack, does not seem ready to let everyone go. 18 seconds ahead for the two escapees.

141km – The attack at kilometer 0 that we were waiting for…

Given the profile of the stage, it’s not surprising that some ambitious people would attempt it from afar, especially since Tadej Pogacar made no secret of the fact that he was ready to let this stage, or even his pink jersey, slip away.

First in action: the Belgian Quinten Hermans and the Australian Simon Clarke. To see if they build a sufficient mattress

142km – And here we go for this 10th stage!

50km of flat terrain to start, then two difficulties, one of which at the top of which the finish will be judged. Let’s go for the 142km of this 10th stage, it should attack very quickly.

The fictional start is given!

Runners parade through the streets of Pompei.

Rather mild weather for the start of this 2nd week

The sun should shine on this 10th stage, even if the arrival at altitude should offer cool temperatures to the runners on the finish side.

The general classification at the start of the 10th stage

If Tadej Pogacar is far ahead, the battle for second place rages in this Giro 2024. Here is the general classification at the start of this 10th stage.

2- Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe) at 2’40
3- Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) at 2’58
4- Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) at 3’39
5- Cian Uijtdebroeks (Ineos Grenadiers) at 4’02

16- Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL) at 7’51

Tadej Pogacar still flies over the race

With a 2’40 lead over his Colombian runner-up Daniel Felipe Martinez, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar dominates the start of Giro 2024 head and shoulders, for which he donned the pink jersey in the 2nd stage and has already won three stages.

In terms of points, it is the Italian Jonathan Milan, already winner of this same classification last year, who wears the cyclamen jersey.

Announced as the future of Belgian cycling, the young Cian Uijtdebroeks will start this 10th stage all in white thanks to his 5th place overall.

Finally, as for the mountain classification, it is obviously still Tadej Pogacar who leads the way with a big lead over Daniel Felipe Martinez. The Colombian will therefore wear the blue jersey of best climber on this 10th stage.

On which channel and at what time to follow this 10th step?

The start of this 10th stage will be given at 1:15 p.m. this Tuesday. Like all the other stages of this Giro 2024, it will be broadcast on Eurosport 1, which will be on the air from 12:30 p.m.

Four non-starters at the start of this 10th stage

Do the mountains scare pure sprinters? In any case, it seems that some are leaning towards refusing obstacles. Four riders are thus announced as non-starters this Tuesday due to illness: the Dutch sprinter from Visma-Lease a bike Olav Kooij, fresh winner of the 9th stage, that of Israel-Premier Tech Ethan Vernon, as well as the Germans Max Kanter and Marius Mayrhofer.

An arrival at the summit to start this second week

After the rest day on Monday, the runners hit the road again for a mountain stage which will take them to the summit of the Boca della Selva, a category 1 pass.

A final climb of around 6.5km with slopes of up to 9% which should not upset the general classification, but which could allow a group of escapees to compete for the bouquet of the day.
