Alain Mabanckou’s novel “The Business of the Dead” – Culture

The boundaries between the dead and the living are fluid, especially in Congo-Brazzaville and especially in a novel by the Franco-Congolese author Alain Mabanckou, who lives in Santa Monica but has always worked on his country of origin. He recently said he was “not wanted” in Congo-Brazzaville, which is hardly surprising: since his novel “Broken Glass”, published in 2005, he has been writing about the overlooked and invisible in Congolese society. In 2012 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Literature of the Académie française for his complete works.
