It’s a murder that hasn’t been solved even after eleven years: In Hanover in 2011, a family man was attacked in the middle of the street by a stranger with a syringe. The 40-year-old died about ten months later. Now the case is again a topic in the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY…unsolved”.

Christoph B. leads an inconspicuous life. The 40-year-old is married and the father of two children. He lives with his family in the Celle district and commutes to Hanover every day. On July 15, 2011, shortly before 4 p.m., he was on his way to his car when he noticed a strange man with an umbrella.

The stranger overtakes the family man and stabs him in the left buttock. Christoph B. discovers a device with a syringe needle at the tip of the stranger’s umbrella and gets hold of the syringe and a piece of plastic. The perpetrator flees – the family man pursues him in vain.

Christoph B dies ten months after the injection attack.

About a week goes by, then Christoph B. suddenly develops symptoms. Two months later he falls into a coma from which he never wakes up. He dies on May 9th. The doctors discover that the syringe contained a mixture of mercury and highly toxic material.

To this day, however, it is unclear why he became the focus of a killer. “That’s very unusual. I’ve never had a comparable case,” said the spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office, Irene Silinger, at the time. According to the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung”, the dead man was a computer specialist and worked for the mining, chemical and energy union.

The investigating officers had questioned relatives and work colleagues and also searched the computer of the dead man, but they did not find any clues.

Case from Hanover on Wednesday topic at “Aktenzeichen XY”

On Wednesday, August 24th, the case will be taken up again in the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY…unsolved”. The criminal police are hoping for witnesses who may have seen the perpetrator before the crime and have a few questions for the onlookers. Who knows a man who knows about chemistry or has access to chemical compounds like mercury? Where are there similar cases? A reward of 5,000 euros is being offered for information leading to clarification.
