Aiwanger and the leaflet: How things are going in Bavaria now – Bavaria

These are allegations that are shaking things up in Bavarian politics: In the 1987/88 school year, an anti-Semitic leaflet was found in Hubert Aiwanger’s school bag. He was also held responsible as the author of the leaflet, according to several people who knew Aiwanger at the time, the SZ, which reported on the allegation for the first time on Friday. A written report commissioned by the SZ also came to the conclusion that Aiwanger’s technical work and the incriminating leaflet “were very likely written on one and the same typewriter”.

So what was his role in the case? Aiwanger has commented on this in several written statements: After he initially told SZ that he had not produced anything like this, he now admits that “one or more copies” were found on him. But he didn’t write it. Whether he also distributed it, he cannot remember. According to Aiwanger, he considers the content disgusting and inhuman. Shortly thereafter, on Saturday evening, Aiwanger’s brother Helmut Aiwanger, who was one year older, publicly said that he had written the pamphlet. On Monday he also said: He believes that Hubert collected the leaflets again to de-escalate.

In any case, a special meeting of the coalition committee between the CSU and free voters is to take place on Tuesday because of the case. Because Aiwanger has been deputy prime minister in Bavaria since the 2018 state elections and also head of the Free Voters. He is to personally answer the coalition partner’s questions about the case shortly before the state elections this year. His answers could be decisive for how things will continue politically in Bavaria. Sebastian Beck, who heads the Bayern department of the SZ, talks about this in this episode.
