Previously, security cameras were sometimes permitted in Airbnb accommodations. But that will change from April 30th. Then hosts will be banned from installing cameras indoors.

Until now, cameras were in AirbnbAccommodations – for example in hallways and shared living rooms – are permitted. However, only as long as they were clearly listed in the apartment description and were not in areas such as bedrooms or bathrooms. But that will end in the future.

As the holiday accommodation provider announced on Monday, the use of security cameras indoors will be banned from April 30th. The San Francisco-based online rental platform said it wanted to “simplify” its security camera policy while prioritizing privacy.

Doorbell cameras and noise monitors still allowed at Airbnb

“Our goal was to create new, clear rules that give our community more clarity about what to expect on Airbnb. These changes were made in consultation with our guests, hosts and privacy experts, and we will continue to solicit feedback to ensure our policies work for our global community,” said an official statement.

However, devices such as doorbell cameras and noise monitors are still permitted. However, hosts must disclose the presence and general location of outdoor cameras before guests book. The cameras must also not be aimed at areas such as outdoor showers or saunas. The presence of noise decibel monitors must also be disclosed. However, these are only allowed in the common areas of the accommodation and are only allowed to measure the decibel level and not record any noises or conversations.

There have been reports in the past of Airbnb guests who were surprised to discover security cameras in their accommodations.
