At the Neurips in New Orleans, the largest conference for artificial intelligence (AI), the natural sciences recently dominated the discussions: mathematical formulas, the computing power of huge cloud computers, increasing efficiency through algorithms. Since the learning machines also raise questions about consciousness and people’s place in the world, Joscha Bach was also there. The cognitive scientist and computer scientist lives in California and works for Liquid AI, a start-up based at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology that develops learning algorithms.
