AI artist brings stars like Audrey Hepburn into the present

“The quality of something to be in the here and now as it is'” – these are the words used by the Turkish artist Alper Yesiltas to describe one of his current AI art projects, called “Thisness”. 2023 catapulted. “Behind this project is the question: ‘What would certain people look like if they lived in our time instead of their own?’ It says further under the first Instagram picture of the project.

The artist uses various software programs for his adaptations, including the AI photo app “Remini” and editing programs such as “Lightroom” or “VSCO”. Speaking to the star, he says: “The most important thing is that the image I edit looks realistic to me. The time I spend on a single image varies, but I would say it takes a while.” And the passion, time and work that Yesiltas puts into his projects seem to be paying off.

Audrey Hepburn in 2023

He has been involved with digital photography and art since 2003, and last summer he started sharing his work on Instagram. Here, 145,000 people are now following his art, which can be traced back entirely to the use of artificial intelligence.

As part of the “Thisness” project, Yesiltas now wants to catapult legends and icons of past centuries into the present day – by using AI to optically adapt them to the modern age. In addition to Audrey Hepburn and Benjamin Franklin, he modernized stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo. You can see all the results in the photo gallery above.

“Thisness”, “As If Nothing Happened” and “Young age(d)”

In addition to “Thisness”, Yesiltas produces numerous other AI works for other projects. Last year his work on “As If Nothing Happened” went around the world. They show deceased celebrities such as Lady Diana or Michael Jackson, whom Yesiltas brings back to life with his art and makes them appear as old as they would be today. You can see the results here.

The “Young age(d)” project, on the other hand, is based on the question: “What would some young celebrities look like in a few decades?”, with the artist letting pop stars like Harry Styles or Justin Bieber age by decades.
