Against heat death: BIOS updates for Ryzen 7000 processors are coming

The mainboard manufacturers Asrock, Asus, Biostar, Gigabyte and MSI will be distributing new BIOS versions for their AM5 boards in the next few days. They are introducing a new AMD Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture (AGESA), which AMD has already sent to partners to protect the Ryzen 7000 processors. Based on this, they develop new BIOS versions.

With the BIOS updates, mainboards can only apply a maximum SoC voltage of 1.3 volts. This limit is intended to prevent the Ryzen 7000 CPUs from overheating and suffering irreparable damage. In a new statement, AMD writes:

“We have found the cause of the problem and have already distributed a new AGESA that includes measures for certain power lines on AM5 motherboards to prevent the CPU from operating outside its specification limits, including a SoC voltage limit of 1.3 V. None of these changes will affect our Ryzen 7000 processors’ ability to overclock memory with EXPO or XMP kits, or boost performance with PBO technology.

We expect all our ODM partners to release new BIOS versions for their AM5 boards in the next few days. We recommend all users to visit their motherboard manufacturer’s website and update their BIOS to ensure their system has the latest software for their processor.

Anyone whose CPU may be affected by this issue should contact AMD Customer Service. Our customer service team is aware of the situation and is treating these cases as a priority.”

AMD no longer restricts the X3D models Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D in the new statement. The manufacturer implicitly acknowledges that normal desktop models without an additional cache can also be affected.

Meanwhile, the statement does not explain why there is no emergency shutdown when temperatures are too high. Such supplies for it Tom’s Hardware based on an anonymous source: High SoC voltages can therefore damage one or more internal temperature sensors, whereupon even higher voltages are subsequently delivered.
