Again flights with Afghanistan refugees from Ramstein – SWR Aktuell

The US will continue flights with refugees from Afghanistan from Ramstein Airport from this weekend.

There are currently just over 9,000 people in need of protection in tent camps at the airfield in Ramstein and in a US barracks in Kaiserslautern. They have had to wait weeks for their onward journey.

Vaccinations against measles and corona in Ramstein

The reason was a few cases of measles among refugees from Afghanistan. The US health authority then stopped the evacuation flights. The Afghans in Ramstein and Kaiserslautern were vaccinated against measles as a precaution. They also received a corona vaccination.

The US government had therefore allowed the resumption of the airlift from today. According to the air base, it will take a few days until all Afghans have left their intermediate stations in Ramstein and Kaiserslautern. It is therefore planned that around 1,000 people will be flown out every day. In the meantime, more than 30,000 refugees were housed in Ramstein and Kaiserslautern.

On August 20, the airfield in Ramstein became the European hub for rescue flights from Kabul to the USA. It is unclear whether he will stay that way.

Several hundred Afghans have now also been accepted into RLP

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has now taken in around 550 people (as of the end of September) who had fled Afghanistan. Some of them had been evacuated from the civil war country by the German Armed Forces, others were flown to Ramstein by the US Army.
