Heavy rains have caused floods and numerous landslides in southern China. At least seven people died. More than 1,300 are trapped in the floods.

Days of torrential rain following Typhoon Haikui triggered more than 100 landslides in southern China, according to media reports. At least seven people were killed, around 1,360 others were trapped in the floods and three were missing, state media reported.

The weather bureau raised the storm warning to the highest level of the four-level warning system after more than 101 liters of rain per square meter fell in three hours, warning of the risk of flash floods, geological disasters and flooding in urban and rural areas.

Worst storm in Hong Kong in 140 years

“Haikui” made landfall in the southeastern province of Fujian on September 5 and wreaked havoc in the populous city of Shenzhen. Neighboring Hong Kong was also hit by the worst storm in 140 years.

Scientists warn that China’s cyclones are increasing in intensity and their tracks are becoming more complex, raising the risk of disasters even in coastal cities like Shenzhen that already have strong flood defenses.
