after the strike on a hospital in Gaza, Israel accuses Islamic Jihad of being behind the shooting; Hamas says at least 200 people died

  • At least 200 people were killed Tuesday evening in a strike on a hospital in Gaza Cityreported the health ministry of the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas.
  • The Israeli army strongly denies being behind this shooting. “We have enough information now, it took us a while but we have to tell the truth and it was not Israeli strikes that hit the hospital”Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli army, said during a press briefing on Wednesday night. According to the IDF, Islamic Jihad fired a salvo of rockets towards Israel and one of its rockets fell on the Ahli Arab hospital. The Israeli army released a video purporting to corroborate its statements.
  • Islamic Jihad described Wednesday as ” lies “ Israel’s accusations. “As usual, the Zionist enemy is trying, through fabrication of lies, to evade responsibility for the brutal massacre it committed by bombing the hospital and pointing the finger at Islamic Jihad”declared the Palestinian Islamist movement in a statement. “We affirm that these accusations are false and baseless”he added.
  • Demonstrations took place in several cities in the Maghreb and the Middle East on Tuesday evening in response to the strike against the Ahli Arab hospital in Gaza City. More than 3,000 people demonstrated in front of the French embassy in Tunis, accusing Paris of being an ally of Israel.
  • The President of the United States, Joe Biden, who took off for Israel on Tuesday, spoke with Benjamin Netanyahu following the shooting at the Gaza hospital. He also communicated with the King of Jordan, Abdullah II. The latter canceled the quadripartite summit which was to be held on Wednesday with the American president, the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi.
  • Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor, met Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. He condemned the “glorification and celebration of violence is inhumane and detestable” of Hamas, while claiming to have discussed with the Israeli Prime Minister the question of a “better access for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip”.
  • Hezbollah announced the death of five of its members in southern Lebanon, Tuesday. The organization confronts the Israeli army on the border between Lebanon and the Jewish state. On Tuesday morning, the IDF announced that four attackers were killed during a “attempt to infiltrate a terrorist squad” coming from Lebanon.
  • The Israeli army announced that it had killed Ayman Nofal, a commander of the Ezzedine Al-Qassam brigades. He was also a member of the General Military Council of Al-Qassam. On the night of Monday 16 to Tuesday 17, the IDF claimed to have killed another Hamas member, Ossama Mazini, in an airstrike.
  • Hamas released the video of a Franco-Israeli hostage it is holding in the Gaza Strip. The 21-year-old girl’s name is Mia Schem. Visibly injured in the arm, she explains that she was at the rave party attacked in the early hours of the Hamas raid on Israeli soil, on October 7. “Please get me out of here as quickly as possible”she concludes in her message.
  • Nearly 200 people were taken hostage by Hamas, according to an updated report from the Israeli army. For its part, Hamas says it holds “between 200 and 250 people”according to Abou Obeida, spokesperson for the Ezzedine Al-Qassam brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist movement.
  • The European Union will open a humanitarian airlift to Gaza via Egypt. “Palestinians in Gaza need humanitarian aid (…). The first two flights will leave this week, and they will bring humanitarian supplies to Gaza”, said Mme von der Leyen from Tirana, Albania. Saturday, Ursula von der Leyen announced to triple humanitarian aid to Gazabringing it from 25 million to 75 million euros.
  • Around 1 million people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip by war, the United Nations (UN) agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said on Sunday. “This figure is likely to rise as people continue to leave their homes”, specified the UNRWA communications director. The evacuation order given by Israel concerns 1.1 million inhabitants of the north of the enclave.
  • At least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, killed in Israel since the attack, launched on Saturday October 7, on the Gaza Strip by Hamas. The number of deaths in the Hamas-controlled enclave rose to 2,750according to a latest assessment.
  • The toll of French nationals killed in Hamas attacks against Israel has risen further, reaching 21 dead and 11 missingthe French foreign ministry reported on Tuesday.
