After the ship disaster: The EU and North Africa – Opinion

The horrific accident in which hundreds of migrants drowned off the Greek island of Pylos is also a result of the vacuum the EU has created in North Africa. Brussels must finally establish a partnership of equals with its southern neighbors.

What a tragedy: probably up to 600 people died on Wednesday when a ship coming from Libya sank off the Greek coast. Demands are already being raised to end the European Union’s planned cooperation with autocratic rulers such as Khalifa Haftar in Libya or Tunisian President Kais Saied. The boat left Haftar’s dominion in Libya, and thousands are currently risking their lives in the Mediterranean, partly out of fear of Saied’s racist campaign against African migrants in his country.
