After the presidential election, why is it so difficult to convert the test to the legislative elections?

In our podcast Wait a minute !, we are talking about the next legislative elections on 12 and 19 June. Emmanuel Macron re-elected President of the Republic, will he have a majority En Marche in the National Assembly? The candidates of the National Rally of Marine Le Pen, second in the presidential election, will they succeed in forming the majority opposition group in the Hemicycle? Jean-Luc Mélenchon, of insubordinate France, will he become Prime Minister, as he hopes?

The importance of local party roots

The legislative will confirm it… or not. Because, by scrutinizing the results of the last legislative elections, a good score in the presidential election is not the promise of performing in these elections. And to obtain many deputies charged, in particular, with taking part in the legislative work and the work of control of the government. In 2017, after obtaining ten million votes in the second round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen’s party had eight deputies elected out of 577, failing to form a parliamentary group, i.e. 15 elected. The Republicans had, for their part, obtained 112 elected.

After a presidential election, why is it often so difficult to transform the trial into the legislative elections? Why can the Socialist Party and Les Républicains, deemed moribund after their score in the 2022 presidential election, remain important in the Hemicycle?

National or local elections?

We talk about it in this episode with the researcher Christele Lagier, lecturer in political science at the University of Avignon, specialist in RN voting. According to Christèle Lagier, “the Rassemblement National and France Insoumise are parties that are only embodied by their leader. However, legislative elections, unlike presidential elections, are more local elections. They must be embodied by 577 people”.
