It has been a month since a skyscraper in the US state of Florida partially collapsed – 97 people were killed. Now the fire brigade has officially stopped the rescue work at the accident site.
One month after the partial collapse of a twelve-story skyscraper in the US state of Florida, the fire department officially ended the rescue work at the accident site. The teams have returned to their operations centers and their families, it said in a tweet.
The Mayoress of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, praised the emergency services as “true superheroes”. Not only did they give everything in the search for victims, they also showed their relatives a lot of care and compassion.
97 people died
The residential complex known as Champlain Towers South with around 130 units had partially collapsed on June 24th in Surfside near Miami for reasons that were still unexplained. The rest of the building, in danger of collapsing, was later deliberately blown up. Survivors were only found in the first hours after the collapse.
Around two weeks ago, the rescue was therefore converted into a salvage operation. The rubble has now been almost completely cleared and stored near Miami International Airport. There, the police forensic experts will continue the search for human remains and personal items, as mayor Levine Cava announced according to media reports.
97 people were killed in the accident. A 54 year old woman is still missing.
