It is still unclear who will take over after the resignation of Minister for Family Affairs Spiegel. It is clear, however, that the Greens want to regulate the successor quickly. And it is also clear that it will be a woman.

After the resignation of Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel, the Greens want to decide on a successor as soon as possible. The co-chair of the Greens, Ricarda Lang, promises a proposal before Easter. The party will take the necessary time. “Nevertheless, there is now a need to clarify this question quickly,” said Lang to RTL / ntv. “That means I don’t think we’ll be dealing with this question beyond Easter.”

“To be suitable for this office”

The most important requirement is that the person takes responsibility for families, children and the open society. “Above all, the person must have one quality: that is to be suitable for this office,” said Lang.

Because of the war in Ukraine and the many women and children who have fled, the office is currently playing a special role. The Greens have many women politicians of all ages who bring experience and expertise with them. “We will look at them now. And then we will make a joint proposal as the federal executive board.”

Nouripour: Again a woman

The co-leader of the Greens, Omid Nouripour, has also announced a speedy succession plan for Spiegel. It is now necessary to find a solution in a timely manner, Nouripour said NDR info. The flight of tens of thousands of women and children from the Ukraine also makes it urgent to fill the position. He assumes that there will again be a woman at the head of the family ministry.

The parliamentary group leader of the Greens, Britta Haßelmann, also emphasized that a decision on the new appointment would be made “very quickly”. in the Deutschlandfunk she said: “There will be decisions about this in a timely manner, which are now next.” When asked whether Anton Hofreiter could move up to the post, she said: “Everyone who knows the Greens knows how important the quota is to us and how important it is for women to be represented in top positions. We will do that in the question of the decision.” The former faction leader Hofreiter is currently chairman of the Europe Committee in the Bundestag.

parity between men and women

Spiegel represented the left wing. In order to maintain parity between men and women in the cabinet, the Greens would have to nominate a woman again, ideally from the left wing again because of the power structure within the Greens.

Spiegel resigned on Monday. She had referred to strong political pressure as justification and wanted to avert damage from the office. The former state minister in Rhineland-Palatinate was accused, among other things, of a four-week family vacation shortly after the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley in 2021.
