After rocket fire: Israel attacks Hamas facilities

Status: 04.11.2022 11:39 a.m

For the first time since the August ceasefire, hostilities have broken out between the Gaza Strip and Israel. After rocket fire from Palestinian territory, Israel’s air force claims to have destroyed military installations.

Israel responded with a counterattack by its air force after a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli military said it attacked two Hamas military installations. According to the Israeli military, bombs and rockets were manufactured in them. Palestinian security circles confirmed the attacks. The facilities were destroyed.

The Palestinian rocket attack was the first since a ceasefire was agreed in August. Israel blames the Palestinian organization Hamas for these attacks, while sources in the Gaza Strip attribute the latest attack to Iran-backed Islamic Jihad. So far, no one has known.

Timing of the attack probably not coincidental

It may not be a coincidence that the attack happened right now, after a ceasefire of several months. On Thursday, Israeli military forces shot dead a commander of Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades during a raid in the West Bank. He was wanted, among other things, for several firearm attacks on Israeli security forces.

The renewed attack is likely to play into the hands of the right-wing conservative former and after the recent election probably also the next Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. Security was one of the main themes of his right-wing religious camp. His party alliance received the most votes in Tuesday’s election.

The last intense mutual shelling between Israel and the Gaza Strip took place in August. After three days and more than 40 dead and hundreds injured, it ended with a ceasefire mediated by Egypt.
