After protest: Oskar Loerke’s grave of honor remains. – Culture

The Berlin Senate has made a new decision on a submission by the Governing Mayor on the recognition and withdrawal of honorary graves in the city. A statement by the mayor’s council was followed and “the originally unintended extension of the honorary grave of the poet Oskar Loerke, who died in 1941, at the Frohnau cemetery was decided for another 20 years”. There had been public protests from writers and the PEN center against the request not to continue to support the poet’s grave and care, to which the political decision-makers have now reacted. Loerke, born in 1884, has enduring importance as an editor at S. Fischer Verlag, as a poet with natural themes and as an author in the inner emigration during the Nazi dictatorship.
