After US President Biden’s recent comments on Taiwan, China’s government is outraged. Biden had declared that he would defend the democratically governed island militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.

As expected, the Chinese state and party leadership reacted angrily to US President Joe Biden’s recent statements of support for Taiwan. According to the spokeswoman for the Chinese state and party leadership, Mao Ning, in Beijing, the US violated the commitments it had made to the People’s Republic with the statements. The US side is sending false signals to pro-independence forces in Taiwan and is violating the so-called one-China principle.

The government in Beijing is forcing all states that maintain diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic not to recognize the autonomously governed Taiwan as a sovereign state.

Biden: US stuck to One China policy

US President Joe Biden said in a TV interview with the US broadcaster CBS that was broadcast yesterday: Stick to the one-China policy and do not support Taiwan’s independence, the people there have to decide for themselves.

Asked by the moderator, the US President said the US Army would defend Taiwan should China attack the island. Biden had made similar statements in the past, but his statement was particularly clear yesterday. He also repeated this when asked.

So far mainly arms deliveries

Although the United States only recognizes the People’s Republic as a sovereign state, it is legally obliged to provide military support to Taiwan. Exactly what that means is unclear. So far, however, this support has mainly been limited to arms deliveries.

The communist government regards the democratically governed island as a separate part of the country, although it was never part of the People’s Republic – and regularly threatens military conquest if a peaceful union does not occur.

Most recently, the visit of US top politician Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan caused tensions between the US government in Washington and the communist leadership in Beijing. The Chinese military conducted live ammunition maneuvers around Taiwan for days in response to the visit. Among other things, rockets were fired over the democratically governed island.
