India is currently the rainy season. It came again to floods and landslides in the western state of Maharashtra. At least 44 people died – many are still missing.
After monsoon rains, countless people died again in landslides in India. Disasters occurred in three different locations in Raigad district in western Maharashtra state. According to a local authority representative, at least 44 people died. 40 more are still missing.
The military helped with the rescue work. Additional problems caused further landslides, which made access roads impassable for the rescue workers. Among other things, this included an important highway that connects the coastal metropolises of Mumbai and Goa. It was therefore partially blocked.
Water levels up to 3.50 meters
After 24 hours of uninterrupted heavy rain, the Vashishti River burst its banks in the region around the city of Chiplun around 250 kilometers south of Mumbai. The authorities recorded water levels of up to 3.50 meters there. At the weekend at least 34 people had died in the metropolis of Mumbai from landslides caused by rain.
The State Meteorological Service of India has issued red warnings for several regions in Maharashtra. In the next few days, therefore, more heavy rains can be expected. During the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, buildings collapse again and again in India. Often old and dilapidated houses are affected.
