After the new North Korean missile tests, the UN Security Council will deal with the incident tomorrow. Because among the ballistic missiles there could also have been a nuclear weapon-capable projectile.
After renewed missile tests by North Korea, the UN Security Council is to deal with the situation on the Korean peninsula in an emergency session on Friday. The USA, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway and Albania requested a meeting of the most powerful UN body.
According to South Korean sources, Pyongyang had fired several missiles, including a suspected nuclear-capable missile with a range of thousands of kilometers. Six ballistic missiles were launched towards the open sea throughout the day.
The United States accused North Korea of a “clear violation of several US Security Council resolutions” after the test. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida criticized the tests “as barbaric behavior and totally unacceptable”.
Tensions intensify
Tensions on the Korean peninsula are escalating as a result of the recent test. While North Korea is relentlessly testing missiles, South Korea and the US have resumed full-scale joint military maneuvers this year. Since the beginning of the year, there have already been more than 50 North Korean missile tests – on Wednesday alone, South Korea’s military recorded more than 20 missile tests by its neighbor. As a result, South Korea undertook its own weapons tests.
This time, the allied forces of South Korea and the United States responded by announcing that they would extend their ongoing “Vigilant Storm” air force exercises, which were supposed to end on Friday. Details would be given later, South Korea’s military said. The decision was made “in connection with the recent provocations by North Korea”.
