When Apple recently introduced the new Macbook Air with an M3 chip, the real surprise wasn’t the M3 chips themselves. Rather, it is interesting that the new generation supports two external monitors instead of just one. Owners of a much more expensive Macbook Pro with an M3 chip (test) are probably wondering whether they also have this option.
Apple confirmed the magazine 9to5Mac now that the Pro models should also be updated via software updates. You can then use two external panels, like the new Macbook Air in 13 and 15 inches. However, there is generally a catch. Two panels with a resolution of 5K and 60 Hz image frequency can be connected. However, customers have to close the integrated display of the Macbook to do this.
A maximum of two displays in total
In practice, only a maximum of two panels can still be controlled by the M3. Any combination of external and integrated displays is possible. This is still an advantage in a productive work environment, as large displays can show more windows next to each other without the font and image elements appearing too small. External monitors can also be adjusted more ergonomically. This is very important in the long term for office jobs.
Apple has not yet announced when customers will receive the update for their M3 MacBook Pro. It may be released in the coming weeks. It also raises the question: Is such a feature also feasible for the Macbook Air with M2 chip? After all, the device is still offered as a cheap alternative by Apple. In the future, customers might be surprised if their newly purchased M2 device only supports one external panel.
