Gilbert Gottfried began his career as a stand-up comedian in New York before he was hired for “Saturday Night Live”, among others. Gottfried has now passed away at the age of 67 after a long illness.

The American comedian and actor Gilbert Gottfried is dead. He died after a long illness, his family said on Twitter and Instagram.

“This is a sad day, but please keep laughing as hard as you can in Gilbert’s honor,” the statement said. Spokesman Glenn Schwartz confirmed the comedian’s death as a result of muscle and heart disease. He is survived by wife Dara, daughter Lily (14) and son Max (12).

“This is a sad day,” wrote colleague Tiffany Haddish on Twitter. Oscar winner Marlee Matlin posted a photo with Gottfried. He was funny and politically incorrect, but had a “soft core”, the actress paid tribute to the deceased.

Gottfried began his career as a teenager on New York comedy stages. He appeared on the satirical show “Saturday Night Live” and was a frequent guest on talk shows. He has appeared in films such as “Beverly Hills Cop II”, “Look Who’s Talking 2” and “So ein Satansbraten”. He was seen on television in series such as “A Terribly Nice Family” or “Hannah Montana”. He has also had many speaking roles in animated films, such as the Disney film “Aladdin,” and in commercials.
