Nvidia has filed a patent. The company is said to be working on a competitor to the Microsoft Holo Lens and enabling holograms in VR technology.
In 2016, Microsoft launched the first generation of AR glasses, the Holo Lens. Since In 2019 the Holo Lens 2 will be available, which can overlay holograms into the real world in a 52-degree horizontal field of view. Business customers and developers can buy the augmented reality headset directly from Microsoft for a price of at least 3,850 euros. The inventor of Xbox Kinect, Alex Kipman, and his team developed both mixed reality headsets. In the meantime, Kipman is no longer employed by Microsoft, and whether there will be a third revision is completely open. Well shall Nvidia on a display technology for hologram representation work. The graphics card giant has submitted a corresponding patent for this.
There is only competition for business customers
The patent is only about the technical explanation of the technology, but not about a specific product. According to the patent, it is a holographic virtual reality display. With the Holo Lens, on the other hand, content is displayed in the real world, while Nvidia’s approach seems to be aimed at virtual reality. There may also be a VR headset with hologram games at some point.
After the Holo Lens, the Magic Leap One celebrated its debut in 2018, although the company soon went bankrupt because there were hardly any customers for the AR glasses. Ultimately, the start-up realigned itself and sold since September 2022 the Magic Leap 2, which is only available to business customers and developers. Instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850, the $3,300 Holo Lens competition is powered by a Zen 2-based AMD Ryzen. The battery life of the Magic Leap 2 is around 3.5 hours, the battery of the Microsoft Holo Lens 2 is empty after two to three hours. Nothing is official yet about Apple’s approach to AR glasses, it may be next year.
