Status: 09/27/2022 12:54 p.m

Thousands flee Vietnam as Typhoon Noru approaches. The hurricane is expected to hit the coast there on Wednesday. The typhoon killed at least eight people in the Philippines.

Typhoon Noru is forecast to hit Vietnam on Wednesday morning local time. As a precaution, the authorities took thousands of people to safety before the arrival of the tropical storm. “Noru” is expected to be one of the most violent typhoons Vietnam has experienced in 20 years, Vietnamese media reported.

Heavy rains have already fallen in the affected areas. Numerous people in the coastal regions of central Vietnam tried to make their houses storm-proof and stocked up on groceries. In the province of Phu Yen on the South China Sea alone, 20,000 fishermen were brought ashore.

The government ordered exit restrictions. Ten airports, including in the city of Da Nang, which is popular with tourists, are to be closed by Wednesday. All flights have been cancelled.

Flooding surrounds a residential area in the Philippine city of San Miguel. Typhoon Noru hit the center of the main island of Luzon particularly hard. Many areas are flooded.

West of the Philippines

“Noru” had previously raged in the Philippines, driving 50,000 people to flee. There are eight fatalities, according to the Philippine Civil Protection. Three people would be missing. The center of the main island of Luzon was particularly badly affected. Many areas are flooded. The extent of the damage is only slowly becoming known.

At its peak, gusts of the typhoon reached speeds of 240 kilometers per hour, at times the storm was classified as a “super typhoon”. However, the storm had weakened since Monday and left the Philippines on Tuesday. It was heading west with winds of 140 kilometers per hour and is expected to regain momentum over the South China Sea.

After Vietnam comes Thailand

According to calculations, after Vietnam, “Noru” will move on to north-eastern Thailand via southern Laos. There, too, the authorities predicted heavy rain for large parts of the country. Typhoons are severe tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific and its marginal seas.
