Status: 06/19/2023 10:33 a.m

The Rheinische Post Mediengruppe is still struggling with the consequences of a cyber attack: newspapers are now published as emergency editions, news portals are only accessible to a limited extent.

After a cyber attack, the operations of the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe are still disrupted. Many of their news portals are only accessible to a limited extent. The attack also affects printed newspapers. Affected are the “Rheinische Post”, the “General-Anzeiger” in Bonn, the “Aachener Nachrichten”, the “Saarbrücker Zeitung” and the “Trierische Volksfreund”. They appeared today only as emergency editions with 28 pages.

State Data Protection Authority was informed

The attack on the website led to a technical fault at an in-house IT service provider on Friday evening, the Düsseldorf media company said. Individual technical systems would have had to be switched off and the connection to the Internet would have had to be cut. Damage was not incurred, data from customers and users was not stolen.

Together with external security experts, the media group is now working to enable secure operation again, the company explained to the Evangelical Press Service (epd). The state data protection authority was informed. It is not yet known who is responsible for the cyber attack at the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe.

Increased attacks on media houses

Media companies in Germany have often been the target of cyber attacks in recent years – including, for example, the “Heilbronner Voice”, an IT service provider for the dpa news agency, the Madsack media group and the Funke media group.
