A “Batgirl” movie was surprisingly buried in 2022. Leading actress Leslie Grace speaks about it in detail for the first time after leaving.

For the first time after the end of the previously announced “Batgirl” film with Leslie Grace (28) last year, the leading actress speaks in detail about the project in an interview. Like the fans, she also learned from the media that the film by directors Adil El Arbi (34) and Bilall Fallah (37) should never be released.

“I found out about it like the rest of you,” tells Grace in an interview with the industry magazine “Variety”. She compares her emotional state on that day last summer with a balloon that you let the air out. She simply let everything sink in, even though she was sure that she had previously created “magic” with the crew and colleagues on the set. The reason for the end? “It has to be something crazy that we have no control over,” thought Grace, who is usually “a very optimistic and positive person in these kinds of circumstances.”

How did “Batgirl” end?

According to media reports, Warner Bros. had already invested a good 90 million dollars at this point. The film was finished but still had to be finished. Instead of completing the whole thing, it was decided to store “Batgirl” in the poison closet.

There was much speculation as to how exactly the end came about. It was said, for example, that the quality of the project was not to blame, even if “Batgirl” allegedly did not do well in test screenings. It was also reported that the film was intended for the streaming market and that management wanted to focus more on blockbuster movies at the time. Other reports said that Warner would rather save further expenses and write off the project for tax purposes.

Peter Safran (57), the new co-head of DC Studios alongside James Gunn (56), had at the end of January explained in an interview with “Variety”.that he could understand the end. According to him, the film could not have been released despite the fact that “a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera” worked on it. In his view, a release would have “hurt” both DC and everyone involved in the project.

Grace now says that there were definitely problems during the shoot, and she doesn’t want to lie about that. For example, half of the filming in Scotland would have taken place at night in pouring rain. According to her, however, there was nothing the crew couldn’t master. She herself asked to see the film, which was therefore still in the early stages of processing when it was tested in front of an audience. Several scenes would have been completely missing in this version. “But the movie that I saw – the scenes that were in it – was amazing,” says Grace. “There was definitely potential for a good movie, I think. Maybe we’ll see bits of that later.”

What’s next?

Last year, before the end, Grace told the industry magazine that she was in talks with the directors about a possible sequel. Even today she still talks to them about it, because there were many ideas – also to tell a longer story.

The actress explains that there have also been talks about the future of her role. “I can’t talk too much about Batgirl’s future or promise anything,” she said. You have no control over it. It’s also unclear who Grace spoke to about it, as she hasn’t spoken to Gunn and Safran. However, she did meet up with Warner Bros. Film Group’s Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca.
