The world football association FIFA wants to exclude Russia from its competitions because of the invasion of Ukraine. As a result, the country should not take part in either the World Cup playoffs in March or the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

According to media reports, the world football association FIFA wants to suspend Russia from its competitions because of the invasion of Ukraine. This means that the national team from Russia should not take part in the World Cup playoffs in March and also not in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

Both FIFA and the European Football Union UEFA were expected to make further decisions on how to deal with the Russian teams in the evening.

Home games only without spectators

FIFA only decided on Sunday that Russia would no longer be allowed to host international football competitions on its own territory. Home games of the Sbornaja should therefore only take place on neutral ground and without spectators. Now the world association intends to impose even tougher sanctions on the country.

Several countries, led by Poland, had previously announced that they no longer wanted to compete against Russia because of the war in Ukraine. In addition to the opponents in the World Cup playoffs – Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden – the football associations of Denmark, Norway and Switzerland also announced such a move.

UEFA also wants to sanction Russian teams

Further sanctions against Russian teams are also expected from UEFA. Bundesliga club RB Leipzig expects the Europa League round of 16 game against Spartak Moscow to be canceled. According to dpa information, there have been corresponding consultations for days after Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. “We are still in close contact with the associations and have complete confidence in UEFA and their decision. We assume that the games will be canceled,” said RB CEO Oliver Mintzlaff when asked by dpa. According to the relevant UEFA regulations, RB would then move into the quarter-finals without a fight.

The International Olympic Committee cleared the way for further measures on Monday. According to the will of the IOC, athletes and officials from Russia and its ally Belarus should no longer be allowed to take part in international competitions. The IOC leadership made this recommendation to all world associations and organizers of sporting events.
