After a train accident in Burgrain: the railway line will soon be passable again – Bavaria

Four months after the train accident in early June, track renewal work is continuing on the railway line in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In the process, sleepers, rails and ballast will be replaced over a distance of around ten kilometers, as Deutsche Bahn announced on request. In a few weeks, travelers will be able to take the train to the holiday region of Garmisch-Partenkirchen again: in mid-November, more than five months after the fatal train accident, regular trains should be running on the route again.

The repair work should be completed on November 16th. A total of around 80 million euros will flow into the renewal of the railway lines in the Werdenfels and Oberland regions. The railway again gave no information on the cost of restoring the accident site.

In the accident in Burgrain near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in early June, four women and a 13-year-old died, dozens of people were injured, some seriously. At the time, 500 helpers rushed to the scene of the accident, and almost everyone in Burgrain was somehow involved. Either as a rescuer yourself or through acquaintances in the accident train. The train derailed on the last day of school, so many students were on board. Among the dead were two women who had fled Ukraine before the war.

It took several days to salvage the wagons that were wedged together, and the railway had to bring heavy equipment to the scene of the accident to set up the wagons, which were tilted on the embankment. The cause of the accident is so far unclear, defects on the tracks are considered possible, and investigations are ongoing. As a consequence of the accident, the railway began to check around 200,000 concrete sleepers nationwide. Most of them should be replaced as a precaution.
