His tenure was short: CSU General Secretary Mayer resigned after only ten weeks in office. He gave health reasons as the reason. Most recently, however, Mayer had also come under massive political pressure.

CSU General Secretary Stephan Mayer has resigned after just ten weeks in office. “For health reasons, I asked the party leader of the CSU today to release me from my job as general secretary,” Mayer said in a statement distributed by the CSU.

Pressure on Mayer had increased

According to the “Bild” newspaper, Mayer also points out another possible reason for his withdrawal in the statement: “In a conversation with a journalist from the ‘Bunte’, which was conducted because of blatantly illegal reporting, I may have used a choice of words that I, in retrospect, did not agree with would consider appropriate. I deeply regret that.”

According to “Bild”, Burda-Verlag accuses Mayer of having threatened and blackmailed a reporter. “I will destroy you,” according to the report, Mayer said to the “Bunte” reporter on the phone.
