Shortly after the end of season four, “True Detective” fans can rejoice: a fifth season has already been decided.

The fourth season of the dark crime series “True Detective” just reached its finale. However, when it comes to the future of the format, the decision-makers at HBO are already doing their best. As announced via the US television provider’s official Instagram account, the anthology series will also receive a fifth season. An announcement clip says: “As one mystery ends, another will begin.”

The extension is certainly not surprising: According to Entertainment Weekly Season four, nicknamed “Night Country”, was the most successful of the format to date – an average of almost 13 million viewers tuned in per episode to follow the mysterious case of policewomen Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster, 61) and Evangeline Navarro ( Kali Reis, 37).

But season four also produced a well-known critic: of all people, series creator Nic Pizzolatto (48) couldn’t do anything with the latest edition, on which he had not worked creatively, and expressed his displeasure on social networks.

Issa López receives the trust again

HBO is apparently unimpressed by this. For the fifth season, Issa López, who was already responsible for “Night Country”, will be relied upon again. It is not yet known whether there will be any returnees in front of the camera, but it is unlikely: so far, the highlight of the series has been that different investigators have been involved in each season.

“True Detective” started with the critically acclaimed first season, in which Matthew McConaughey (54) and Woody Harrelson (62) took on the leading roles. Season two followed with Colin Farrell (47), Taylor Kitsch (42) and Rachel McAdams (45), before Mahershala Ali (50) and Stephen Dorff (50) tackled the case in season three.

The illustrious names show that whoever takes on the case in season five is likely to be at least a global star and sometimes an Oscar winner. A targeted start date has not yet been communicated, but the coming season should be shown again in this country via Sky/Wow.
