Train with 240 passengers derails in the USA – three dead

On the way from Los Angeles to Chicago, a long-distance train derails – and several wagons tip over. The police report deaths and injuries. The train is said to have collided with a truck.

At least three people have died in a train crash in Missouri. The passenger train with more than 240 passengers and twelve crew members on board crashed into a dump truck at a level crossing and derailed, as the state railway company Amtrak announced.

The truck blocked the level crossing in Mendon, a town about 150 kilometers northeast of Kansas City, it said. Eight wagons and two locomotives derailed. “There are numerous injuries and we can confirm three fatalities – two on the train and one in the dump truck,” said a police spokesman. The train was en route from Los Angeles to Chicago.

The first photos and videos on social media showed wagons tipped on their side next to the tracks. Some of the passengers who were able to free themselves were sitting on the overturned wagons. Just the day before, another Amtrak train in the state of California collided with a vehicle at a level crossing. There were three dead in the accident.
