Negina died in a hail of bullets, Samina and Basira were killed by a bomb. Three young lives ended on a single spring day this year in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. There were three women who had fought for visibility, who had taken on a task that they could do better than their male colleagues: They had come into contact with mothers to vaccinate their children against polio. It is not clear who was behind the attacks, but the death of these vaccination team members brings together a lot that is problematic in Afghanistan – and could increase in the future: violence, disregard for women, hostility to vaccinations.
