The voice sounds anxious on the phone, the man is nervous. He’s obviously under pressure. “These are cruel people,” he says. “They can lock us up, they can kill us.” A call in Afghanistan from a man to whom Germany actually owes a lot – but for whom no one in Berlin has campaigned so far. And that despite the fact that Arif and his family were probably the most important helpers of the German local forces in the days of the fall of Kabul. Arif actually means something else, but he is sure that his life is in danger; therefore his name is changed here.
