Whether they perished in a mass panic or were killed by bullets will probably never be known. But at least five people have died at Kabul Airport in the past few hours, at least five of the hundreds, maybe thousands, who somehow managed to get here. The “Hamid Karzai” airport, which will probably not be named after the first president of the post-Taliban era, which has now come to an end, is the city’s last place of hope: Those who make it here may still be able to get out. So whoever has them lets connections play, others try with money. Desperate people who have neither one nor the other try to slip through the NATO wire or climb over fences.
