Last fall, several earthquakes shook Afghanistan. The infrastructure is far from recovered. The situation there is life-threatening for children, especially in winter.

More than three months after the devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan, more than 96,000 children are dependent on support, according to the UN children’s fund Unicef. In view of the great destruction in the villages in the west Afghanistan and the stubborn winter, Unicef called for more help for those affected.

“The children are still trying to cope with the loss and trauma. Schools and health centers that the children depend on are damaged beyond repair or completely destroyed,” said Fran Equiza, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan. “Children and families without a home live in life-threatening conditions at night as they have no way to heat their makeshift shelters.”

In the fall of 2023, a series of earthquakes in Afghanistan caused devastating damage. More than 1,000 people died in Herat province and thousands of houses were destroyed. There are repeated severe tremors in the region where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian plates meet.
