AfD reprimands European election candidates for information on CVs

The AfD has reprimanded its European election candidates Bausemer and Khan-Hohloch for providing inaccurate information in their CVs. However, the accusation of intentional deception is unfounded. Both are allowed to continue running.

Arno Bausemer and Mary Khan-Hohloch, two AfD candidates for the European elections, have been reprimanded by their party for providing inaccurate information in their CVs. A party convention discussed the allegations against her in detail, it said in a statement. Bausemer and Khan-Hohloch were present and questioned.

“The convention criticizes the inaccuracies found in the candidates’ self-portrayal during the nomination meeting, but sees the accusations made in some cases of intentional deception as ultimately unfounded,” the statement says.

Allegations were confirmed upon examination

Bausemer and Khan-Hohloch hit the headlines in the so-called impostor affair – because of allegedly providing false information about professional and academic qualifications in their CVs.

The allegations were confirmed in an internal AfD audit. The party leadership then spoke out in favor of neither being allowed to hold internal party positions for two years. However, the candidate list for the 2024 European elections including Bausemer (Saxony-Anhalt, 10th place on the list) and Khan-Hohloch (Brandenburg, 14th place on the list) was retained.

Parts of the party base against further candidacy

However, there were demands from the party base not to allow them to enter the EU Parliament for the AfD and, if necessary, to repeat the nomination of candidates. The convention now decided against it. “Subsequent intervention” in the democratically elected list should be avoided “also with a view to the legal certainty of participation in the election and approval of the AfD list,” the statement said.
