Adriatic coast in Italy: Seven dead in floods

Floods in Italy have killed seven people and more are missing. During heavy rainstorms, streets and houses were flooded. Within hours it rained as much as usual in six months.

According to the authorities, at least seven people died as a result of flooding on the Italian Adriatic coast. Other people are missing, including a child.

The province of Ancona on the Adriatic coast and the neighboring region of Umbria are affected.

In two hours as much rain as usual in half a year

According to civil protection, central Italy was hit by heavy rainstorms on Friday night. According to the “Corriere della Sera”, 400 millimeters of rain fell within two hours on Thursday evening, as much as it normally does in six months.

Streets and houses were flooded. In parts of Ancona, electricity and telephone connections failed. Schools remained closed in particularly affected areas.

On Thursday, civil protection called on residents of the coastal town of Senigallia north of Ancona to seek out higher-lying areas in view of the flooding. The President of the Marche Region, Francesco Acquaroli, wrote on Facebook that the very serious meteorological crisis in the region is a cause of extreme concern.
