ADAC is expecting a lot of traffic jams before Christmas

As of: December 18, 2023 1:15 p.m

Drivers should prepare for slow traffic shortly before Christmas: The ADAC is expecting a lot of traffic jams on the motorways between major cities on Friday and Saturday. Trips to the Alpine countries will probably take longer.

The ADAC expects traffic jams on many motorways and the routes to the winter holiday resorts in the Alpine countries before the Christmas weekend. The car club in Munich predicts that the most traffic jams will occur on Friday afternoon and also on Saturday morning.

In Germany, the “most important traffic jam routes” will be the motorways around the large cities of Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich. The ADAC also expects traffic jams on the A1 Cologne-Hamburg, the A2 Dortmund-Berlin and on the southbound motorways such as the A7 and A8.

Traffic conditions expected to be quiet at Christmas

According to the ADAC, traffic will be slow beyond the German borders, especially on the trunk roads to the winter sports resorts – in Austria, among others, on the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner motorways, in Switzerland on the Gotthard route and the access roads to the ski areas of Graubünden and the Bernese Oberlands, Valais and Central Switzerland.

Traffic jams are also to be expected in South Tyrol and the Dolomites. The ADAC expects traffic to be relatively quiet on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, before traffic becomes busier again from Boxing Day onwards.
