Michael Gambon, known for his role as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter saga, died in hospital of pneumonia at the age of 82, his family announced Thursday, September 28 in a press release published by SkyNews. “We are devastated to announce the death of Michael Gambon”announced his wife and son.

The Anglo-Irish actor played the role of Dumbeldore from the third film in the saga, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It was Richard Harris, who died in 2002, who played this role in the first two films. Michael Gambon was also known for playing French detective Jules Maigret in the series Maigret on the British channel ITV, as well as for his role in the BBC series The Singing Detective.
