Activists dump fluorescent dye, fish found dead in river

The action took place in several Alsatian towns on Saturday. Activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) Strasbourg, “an international movement advocating civil disobedience to stop the destructive system of life”, poured fluorescent green dye into several waterways.

Their objective ? “Denounce the State’s decision to permanently store 42,000 tonnes of toxic waste in the Wittelsheim potash mines. This waste threatens the French, Swiss and German water table, as well as local plant and animal species,” it is written on their Facebook page, where photos of the results were also published. In Strasbourg of course but also in Colmar.

A “harmless dye” according to XR

End of the story ? No since the mayor of the Haut-Rhin town indicated on Sunday the “presence of dead fish in the Lauch after the pollution caused by an “ecologist” movement. » “The perpetrator was identified by the Green Brigades. We are continuing the procedure against this individual,” added Eric Straumann, also on his Facebook page.

Is the cause and effect link proven? Extinction Rebellion assures that “the dye used called fluorescein or uranine is completely harmless to living beings (humans, plants, animals). It is used in ophthalmology, fish farming and by cavers. »
