According to the ADAC, fuel at motorway service stations is sometimes massively overpriced

The ADAC warns of significant price differences between petrol stations on and off the motorway. In the past few months, he has registered differences of up to 70 cents per liter.

Based on its own investigation, the General German Automobile Club (ADAC) has warned against disproportionately high fuel prices at motorway service stations. According to the information, differences of more than 20 euros per tank filling are possible. In a sample – the “service station test” – the ADAC compared the prices at service stations with those at gas stations at the next exit.

The data were collected in March. At that time, there was an average saving of just under 42 cents per liter for E10 petrol by driving off the motorway. For diesel, it was just under 36 cents. The traffic club even found a difference of almost 70 cents at the top.

“That’s just bold”

ADAC fuel market expert Christian Laberer called the differences “massive”. Since the survey by his association, the fuel market has calmed down overall. “Nevertheless, the price differences between the gas stations on the Autobahn and those off the Autobahn are still very significant. Nothing has changed in the basic statement of our study,” says Leber.

A recent look at the fuel price data confirms this, according to the dpa news agency. There are often price differences of between 30 and 40 cents, sometimes above – or below.

“It’s understandable when mineral oil companies sell their fuel a few cents more expensive on the Autobahn than elsewhere,” says ADAC Transport President Gerhard Hillebrand. However, he lacks any understanding of the extent of the price increases that have been determined. “That’s just cheeky.”

Fuel price app can help

According to the ADAC, people who leave the Autobahn for a short time can save significantly. With a tank filling of 50 liters, it would be – based on the price differences found in the study – almost 21 euros, with a tank filling of diesel almost 18 euros.

“Refueling next to the motorway is basically always worthwhile,” according to the ADAC. He recommends finding out about the prices with a fuel price app.
