According to Hansi Flick: Who could be the new coach of the DFB team?

Who will be Hansi Flick’s successor? Time is running out nine months before the home European Championship. 19 years after his resignation, Rudi Völler woke up again on Monday morning as team boss of the national soccer team. As in 2000, the 63-year-old stepped in when the DFB was in dire need – this time because things could no longer continue with Flick as national coach after the 4-1 defeat against Japan. And this time it should be over after a game of Völler. Who could take over after the showdown against vice world champion France this Tuesday (9 p.m./ARD) in Dortmund?

National coaches are expensive. After Hansi Flick’s departure, money will also play a role for the German Football Association in its search for a successor. Flick signed a contract until after the 2024 European Championship a good two years ago, which is still valid. According to the press release, Flick and assistant coaches Marcus Sorg and Danny Röhl were only relieved of their duties. It is therefore possible that the DFB will initially have to finance the position of “national coach” twice when signing the new one.

Flick’s dismissal also puts a financial burden on the DFB

The DFB does not quantify the exact salary of the most important employee in its financial report; the position is grouped together with several others in the large “budget group 6”. “In total, the DFB’s personnel costs amount to 59.67 million euros,” says the last financial report on all almost 500 employees “including the sports management and coaching staff.”

The report revealed the extremely tense financial situation of the association. The loss was also 33.5 million euros due to necessary tax provisions. In the summer, the association developed a consolidation plan to reduce the existing structural deficit from currently 19.5 million euros annually to at least 4.5 million euros.

The Flick exit puts an additional financial burden on the association, especially since some of the alleged candidates such as Julian Nagelsmann (FC Bayern) and Stefan Kuntz (Turkish Association) would have to be released from current contracts. With the record champions, the DFB could benefit from the fact that Bayern might not be averse to removing the 36-year-old from the payroll. Nagelsmann was released at the end of March during the international match phase. At the DFB he would follow Flick as he did at Bayern in 2021.
