Accommodation for refugees: countries at the limit

More than 980,000 people from Ukraine have now fled to Germany. Now the number of accommodations is running out. In addition, there are problems in some federal states in offering all children a school place.

In Germany, the number of accommodations for refugees is becoming scarce. In twelve of the 16 federal states, no new refugees can currently be distributed. The background to this is the high number of refugees from Ukraine, but also asylum seekers from other countries, reports the editorial network Germany, citing the Federal Ministry of the Interior,

A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior told RND that more than 980,000 people had fled to Germany from Ukraine since the beginning of the war. It is known that several federal states have expressed concern that they will soon reach their capacity limits – also because it can be observed that the number of refugees on the Balkan route is increasing. Against this background, “twelve federal states have currently activated a block in the initial distribution system”. According to the spokeswoman, temporary bans on the admission of refugees are “not unusual”.

In addition, distribution is still possible, since large federal states can still take in people. The federal government is helping by providing 318 federal properties and is examining further support measures, the spokeswoman said, according to the RND.

More than 163,000 Ukrainian students

Women, children and young people in particular have fled Ukraine. This also poses problems for at least some countries at the beginning of the school year. According to a survey by the Evangelical Press Service among the responsible ministries, not all pupils could be accommodated in at least three countries.

According to the Conference of Ministers of Education, more than 163,000 Ukrainians were admitted to general or vocational schools by the end of last week. Most in the most populous federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. At the same time, more than 350,000 war refugees from Ukraine under the age of 18 were registered in the Central Register of Foreigners by mid-August.

Three countries have housing problems

In North Rhine-Westphalia, where school started again at the beginning of August, around 32,800 pupils from Ukraine are accommodated at an educational institution. According to the Ministry of Education, more than 2,100 children and young people have not yet been assigned a place at school.

In Saxony, according to information from the local Ministry of Education, 9,000 out of around 10,000 registered students are assigned. In Thuringia it was said that up to 2,600 children and young people from the Ukraine were required to attend school and the sometimes complicated procedures had not yet been completed.

In many federal states, Ukrainian pupils are initially placed in special classes and receive language lessons in particular. According to many federal states, the biggest problem for the schools is recruiting additional staff, which was often already scarce.
