A bus driver is apparently blinded by the sun – and loses control of the vehicle. The school bus then falls more than 100 meters. Three people are flown to hospitals.

A bus carrying schoolchildren fell more than 100 meters in Italy. According to media reports, the bus driver and at least two other people were injured so badly that they had to be flown to hospitals by helicopter.

The other occupants, most of whom were in their teens, were treated at the scene with minor injuries following the crash early Tuesday afternoon.

The bus came off the road on a mountainous road near Massa-Carrara in Tuscany and fell in a forest. The fire service reported that one adult and two teenagers were injured. Rescue helicopters took them to hospitals. The adult man is said to be the bus driver.

Photos from the scene of the accident showed the blue bus stopping on a slope between trees and branches. Helpers from the mountain rescue and the fire brigade abseiled down to him. According to “Corriere della Sera”, the bus driver told the rescue workers that he was blinded by the sun and lost control of the vehicle. There was talk of a total of around 20 inmates, mainly teenage students on their way home.

The bus driver was reportedly trapped in the car and rescued by rescue workers with serious injuries. He was conscious before he came to a clinic.
