There is an accident involving two roller coasters at the Legoland amusement park, injuring around 30 people. After more than a year of investigations, there are now criminal orders against two employees.

After the rollercoasterAn accident with around 30 injuries at the German Legoland Park in Günzburg, Bavaria, resulted in penal orders being issued against two technical employees. As the Memmingen public prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday, the 56 and 34 year old men are said to have made mistakes when correcting a malfunction on the roller coaster, so that two trains carrying 19 visitors each collided. One person was seriously injured in the accident in August 2022, the others were slightly injured.

At the request of the public prosecutor, penal orders were issued against the two employees by the Günzburg district court for negligent bodily harm in 29 cases. “Fines in the mid to low four-digit euro range were imposed on the defendants,” explained Chief Public Prosecutor Thorsten Thamm.

If a penalty is ordered, the accused can appeal against the sentence imposed. In that case, the allegations would have to be heard in a public trial in Günzburg.

Rear-end collision

In the accident, a train from the “Fire Dragon” roller coaster in the Swabian amusement park crashed into a train in front of it. The roller coaster was then out of operation for a long time for the police investigation and other work, but was reopened after two months.

According to the investigation, there was an operational disruption at the amusement park, which caused the two trains to stop. While trying to correct the error, the men are said to have accidentally deleted a train from the railway’s control system, which led to the accident.

In addition, the employees are said to have failed to use the emergency stop system to prevent the collision. The 56-year-old had been working as a mechanic at Legoland for years. The 34-year-old, however, had only been working there as a technician for a few days. The accused are presumed innocent until the end of the proceedings.
