A six-story apartment building collapses. Why? Two people lose their lives in the process.

Two people were killed when a six-storey apartment building collapsed in a suburb of the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Local rescue workers said debris hit the two sleeping residents in a neighboring house on Thursday morning.

The house is still under construction. The incident came just two days after another building collapsed in western Kenya’s capital.

Now a debate about dubious construction companies and non-compliance with building regulations has flared up again. According to Governor Kimani Wamatangi, eight buildings in the Kiambu district, north of Nairobi, have collapsed in the past six months alone.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, with around 4.3 million inhabitants, living space is scarce. Many companies are lax about safety when building new homes and circumvent existing building codes for quick profits. As a consequence of the incident in the metropolis, Nairobi’s governor Johnson Sakaja called for the building contractor responsible to be charged with murder.
