Two aspiring speedsters had in Aachen was very unlucky on Thursday night. The 24-year-old driver and his passenger wanted to take part in a night race – but lost their car in the process. The Aachener Zeitung (AZ) reports on the case.

The two men came to a stop at a red light around 3 a.m. Police officers in civilian clothes and an inconspicuous vehicle pulled up next to them. The two men are said to have communicated through clear facial expressions and gestures: Fancy a race? The men drove back and forth, revved the engine and pointed at the street.

Speeding cars can be confiscated

When the light turns green, the two race off. The police also accelerated, caught up with the two of them – and turned on the blue lights and siren. The speeders stopped at the side of the road. When examining the speeding car, officers discovered several defects. The car, a VW EOS convertible, was taken out of circulation. The driver received a criminal complaint for illegal car racing.

Illegal street racing is a criminal offense. Cars involved can be confiscated as a means of crime. In a prominent case, the Essen district court even permanently confiscated a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. The cars of the legally convicted speeders were auctioned off.
