Although access is prohibited, the former Calan quarry near Lorient (Morbihan) has become a popular bathing spot for young people in recent years. This is where a tragedy happened on Monday afternoon, as reported West France. Around 4 p.m., a 21-year-old man reportedly climbed a rocky promontory before jumping into the water. Not seeing him rise to the surface, the two friends who accompanied him then called the emergency services.
Significant resources have been dispatched to the scene. The rescuers managed to bring the young man to the surface but despite several attempts at resuscitation, the young man died. An autopsy of the victim’s body is to take place in the next few hours to determine the cause of death. An investigation, entrusted to the gendarmerie, has also been opened to shed light on this tragedy.
